The Rising Star of Distance Running
Interview by Victor Gurung, Media and Technical Lead Consultant, Bhutan Olympic Committee
Pema Dhendup is a young and promising distance runner from Thimphu, Bhutan. Born into a family that struggles to meet daily living expenses, his story is one of resilience, passion, and triumph. Despite the challenges, Pema and his family transformed their struggles into victories, proving that unwavering determination can conquer even the toughest obstacles.
For Pema, earning the title of “Young Distance Runner” was not just a matter of fate. It was the result of his sweat, perseverance, and relentless dedication. Growing up in Thimphu, where resources were limited, Pema’s dreams remained abundant. His father, the sole breadwinner, serves tirelessly in the Royal Bhutan Police to provide for the family, leaving little room for luxuries. Yet, Pema’s love for running blossomed during his childhood as he raced with friends around their colony.
Recognizing his potential, Pema began practicing on the athletic synthetic track below Yangchenphu Higher Secondary School. His journey started with basic facilities and a raw passion, as he trained without professional support.
At a young age, Pema began participating in school marathons and the Thimphu Thromde Marathon, consistently ranking among the top contenders. Despite his undeniable talent, the lack of resources limited his growth as an athlete. However, Pema refused to let these limitations define him.
Determined to improve, he woke up before dawn to train, running on playgrounds, steep hills, and rugged trails. After school, he balanced homework, household chores, and evening training sessions. Pema also took the initiative to study running techniques by following professional athletes on social media and watching tutorial videos on YouTube.
Without formal coaching, Pema devised his training schedules and nutritional plans. His discipline caught the attention of an athletic coach, who began training him. With guidance and continued effort, Pema’s talent flourished. He trained in harsh weather conditions, pushing his body and mind to their limits.
Registration is now open for the BIM 2025.
Pema’s family and community recognized his passion and supported him wholeheartedly. Their encouragement fueled his motivation and reminded him that he was never running alone.
By 2023, Pema’s dedication began to yield significant results. He won the School Marathon and the Thimphu Marathon Junior category. In 2024, he claimed the titles of Thimphu Thromde School Champion in the 3000M and 1500M events, and he secured the first runner-up position at the Highland Festival, where he was also recognized as the youngest participant.
Pema went on to represent Bhutan in international competitions, setting personal bests at the Asian Junior Championship (10:10 in the 3000M) and the South Asian Junior Athletics Championship (9:56 in the 3000M). His hard work and rigorous training transformed him into a formidable competitor, improving his timings and breaking personal records.
By the age of 19, Pema had won multiple medals in local and regional competitions. Despite his achievements, he remains humble and driven, determined to inspire others facing similar challenges.
Today, Pema Dhendup stands as a symbol of hope and perseverance. Despite limited resources, he turned his dreams into reality through sheer determination and self-discipline. His focus on self-improvement and relentless pursuit of excellence have made him a role model for aspiring athletes.
