A Dream Born on the Basketball Court

A Dream Born on the Basketball Court

The Swimming Pool Basketball Hall in Thimphu, a familiar spot to everyone, houses a small canteen that draws visitors before and after matches, whether for a quick coffee, a bowl of noodles, or simply to hang out. But this isn’t just any canteen—it’s the centerpiece of a story about dreams, determination, and community. Here, 15-year-old Kinley Wangyel grew up, immersed in the echo of bouncing basketballs and the steadfast encouragement of his parents, who dared to dream big for their son.

Kinley’s story is woven into the heart of the Swimming Pool Basketball Hall in Thimphu, where his father, the court’s caretaker, and his mother, who runs the family’s humble canteen, have nurtured not just their livelihoods but their dreams. We loved every game in our youth,” his father reflects, his voice heavy with pride and nostalgia. “But watching Kinley play basketball on this very court—it’s a different kind of joy. We always wanted him to aim high, and we’ve supported him every step of the way.

Their encouragement bore fruit. Today, Kinley is a Class 8 student at Changangkha Middle Secondary School and a member of Bhutan’s U16 Basketball National Squad. “Basketball is my first love,” Kinley shared, his eyes shining with passion. “But I also love football. These sports are my escape and my motivation.”

His journey wasn’t accidental. Kinley spent his childhood immersed in the world of basketball. “Every tournament, every practice—I never missed a chance to watch,” he reminisced. “As a little boy, I’d sit by the court and imagine myself playing in the national squad one day. Last year, that dream came true. Now, as a point guard, I feel an immense responsibility to give my best.”

Registration is now open for the BIM 2025.

Kinley’s path wasn’t always smooth. Starting at age three, he struggled to keep up with older players. “There were moments I questioned why I chose this sport,” he admitted with a laugh. “But I think growing up here—seeing players push themselves every day—sparked something in me. Now, basketball is my life.”

Discipline became his cornerstone. “Basketball teaches you more than just skills—it teaches focus and grit,” he explained. “I stick to a strict routine, balancing studies and practice. I work hard because I fear missing my shot if the right opportunity comes. That fear drives me.”

Kinley finds inspiration in Dago Retty of Thimphu Magic. “Watching Dago play is mesmerizing,” he said. “His defense and offense—it’s pure magic. He’s my role model.”

Running has also become a crucial part of Kinley’s regimen. “Running keeps me fit and builds my stamina,” he said. “Each run strengthens not just my body but my willpower. It prepares me for challenges both on and off the court.”

This morning, something extraordinary happened. During our interview, Kinley received an unexpected surprise. When asked what he needed most, he hesitated before shyly answering, “A good pair of basketball shoes.” Moments later, Mr. Kezang, the owner of Sport Collection in Thimphu and distributor of Silco Bhutan, gifted him a brand-new pair of Puma Playmaker Pro basketball shoes.

I am deeply grateful to the Basketball Federation of Bhutan for its generosity in employing my dad, providing us with a space to run our canteen—our family’s sole source of income—and, above all, for supporting and guiding me in chasing my dream.

Overwhelmed, Kinley struggled to find the right words. “I can’t thank Mr. Kezang enough,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion. “This means so much to me. It’s more than just shoes—it’s a symbol of support and belief in my journey.”

Mr. Kezang, known for his generosity and love for sports, promised continued support for Kinley’s aspirations. “Young athletes like Kinley are the future of Bhutan,” he said. “It’s an honor to help him chase his dreams.”

I didn’t know much about the Bhutan International Marathon before, but now that I’ve heard about it, I’m eager to participate—though I haven’t joined before, I might just be part of it this March if other commitments don’t get in the way.

Kinley’s story reflects the incredible impact of hard work, community, and unwavering hope. From the familiar courts of Thimphu to the national stage, his journey reminds us that every great dream begins with a single step—and the courage to keep moving forward.

As Kinley rises, he carries not only his own aspirations but also the dreams of his family, the guidance of his mentors, and the pride of an entire nation cheering him on.

But this isn’t just Kinley’s story. It’s a story for everyone—a story of resilience, passion, and the belief that no dream is too big when nurtured with love and determination. His journey inspires us all to look within, find our purpose, and chase our dreams, no matter where they begin.

The Bhutan International Marathon returns on 1st March 2025—are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime?
