In conversation with Thinley Wangkay Dorji
Last week, I had the chance to chat with one of Bhutan’s most inspiring athletes, Thinley Wangkay Dorji. Even with his packed schedule, he kindly made time for me, and what struck me most was how down-to-earth he is despite all his achievements.
Thinley isn’t just a familiar face in Bhutan’s fitness community—he’s a role model. Known for his hard work and humble attitude, he recently won Mr. Bhutan 2024 at the 13th National Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship. Adding to this, he made Bhutan proud by clinching a Gold medal in Men’s Fitness Physique and a Silver medal in Men’s Athletic Physique at the 15th World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships in the Maldives.
But beyond all the titles and medals is an incredible story of transformation, one that he humbly shared with me during our chat.
“Back in school, I wasn’t into sports,” Thinley said, laughing as he recalled his younger days. “I wasn’t muscular or athletic. I was just an average, skinny boy who didn’t care much about fitness.”
It wasn’t until he grew adulthood that something began to shift. “I started liking individual sports and eventually developed a strong interest in fitness. When I was young, a small gym opened in Gelephu. It wasn’t much—just a tiny space with a handful of people—but I decided to give it a shot. Once I started seeing my body transform, I got hooked.”
He paused, then added with a chuckle, “Gymming made me feel confident and, honestly, a bit more manly. That’s how it all started.”
Sitting down for the interview, one question immediately set the tone: How has fitness shaped your life?
“Fitness gave me direction,” he said, reflecting deeply. “When you’re young, you want to try everything—even the things you probably shouldn’t. I’ve had my share of wild days, and I won’t deny it. But fitness brought discipline into my life. It taught me patience, how to push myself, and, most importantly, how to love and respect myself.”
It became clear that fitness for him was more than a journey of physical transformation. “For me, going to the gym isn’t just about winning medals or gaining fame. It’s about being healthy—both in body and mind. Fitness has helped me become a better version of myself, and that’s what I hope to inspire in others,” he added with quiet determination.
Thinley’s love for fitness goes beyond weightlifting. With a big smile, he told me about his experience at the Bhutan International Marathon. “Yes, I participated! And I finished in style—with push-ups at the finish line,” he said, laughing.
“That moment was unforgettable. If I’m around next March, I’d love to run again and beat my own record,” he added.
He encouraged others to join the race, saying, “It’s not just a marathon. It’s a chance to experience Bhutan’s beauty, challenge yourself, and create memories you’ll cherish forever. So, mark your calendar for March 1, 2025, and I’ll see you at the start line!
When I asked him what advice he would give to someone just starting their fitness journey, he leaned forward, thoughtful yet confident.
“Fitness isn’t just for athletes. It’s for everyone,” he said with conviction. “You don’t need fancy equipment or a strict routine—just start. Play a sport you enjoy, exercise regularly, and most importantly, stay away from things that harm your body.”
He paused briefly, then added with a reflective tone, “Being healthy isn’t just about looking good. It’s about feeling good, being there for your loved ones, and living life to the fullest. Small choices every day can make a huge difference.”
When I brought up Fit Lab, Thimphu’s trending gym that he owns, I asked, How did that dream come to life?
“Fit Lab has always been my dream,” he began. “I wanted to create a space where people could grow stronger—not just physically but mentally too.”
He continued with enthusiasm, “We’ve designed it to be more than just a gym. It’s a community where everyone feels supported, valued, and motivated. I try my best to make sure every member has a great experience, no matter where they are in their fitness journey.”
Thinley’s story reminds us that it’s never about where you start—it’s about having the courage to take that first step and the determination to keep going. His journey from an average, skinny youth to a national icon is a testament to the power of discipline, passion, and self-belief.
What truly sets him apart isn’t just his achievements but his humility and his genuine desire to inspire others. Thinley’s approach to fitness—as a path to not just a stronger body but also a healthier mind—is something we can all aspire to embrace.
As we celebrate Thinley’s recent triumph as Mr. Bhutan 2024 and his incredible performance at the world championships, let’s take a page from his book. Whether it’s starting small with a daily walk, signing up for that marathon, or simply choosing to be kinder to your body, remember his words: “Fitness isn’t just a journey. It’s a way of life.”
Congratulations, Thinley, on your outstanding achievements—you’ve made Bhutan proud and continue to inspire us all!
