The Bhutan International Marathon is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of human endurance, stunning landscapes, and Bhutan’s unique hospitality. This highly anticipated event brings together professional athletes and passionate amateur runners from around the world to take part in an unforgettable journey through the picturesque hills, valleys, and villages of Punakha Dzongkhag. This event promises a challenge like no other.

Race Categories: Full Marathon and Half Marathon

The marathon offers two exciting race categories. The Full Marathon (42.195 km) starts in Yemina, under Gasa Dzongkhag, while the Half Marathon (21.1 km) begins in Wokuna, Punakha Dzongkhag. Both races provide runners with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of Bhutan as they wind through stunning landscapes, with the iconic Punakha Dzong serving as a majestic backdrop.

But what really sets this marathon apart is the local touch, and the carefully planned route wil ensure runners have the support they need every step of the way.

Aid Stations: A Warm Welcome at Every Mile

Along the marathon route, runners will pass through 9 well-positioned aid stations, each offering refreshing treats, water, and a moment to recharge. Here’s a detailed look at each of the aid stations and what participants can expect at each stop:

A Step-by-Step Journey Through the Race Course

The marathon starts at an elevation of 1,968.9 meters (6,459.7 feet) in Yemina, under Gasa Dzongkhag, where runners will be greeted with warm Suja (butter tea), Shamdrey (rice with mixed vegetables), fruits, and water to fuel their bodies for the challenge ahead. Toilet facilities will also be available to ensure a comfortable start.

First Aid Station – 5.3 km (Elevation: 1,677.3 m / 5,502.9 ft)

After descending from the higher altitudes, runners will reach the first aid station, where water and fruits will be provided to keep them hydrated and energized.

Second Aid Station – 10.8 km (Elevation: 1,547.1 m / 5,075.9 ft)

By the time runners reach this station, they will have covered a good stretch of the course. They can take a break here with water, fruits, and a toilet facility before pushing forward.

First Chip Timing – 13.7 km (Elevation: 1,488.5 m / 4,883.4 ft)

At this checkpoint, runners can track their progress and push themselves towards the next milestone.

Third Aid Station – 15.5 km (Elevation: 1,503.4 m / 4,932.5 ft)

A quick refreshment stop with water, fruits, and a toilet will keep the runners fueled as they prepare to tackle the next segment of the course.

Half Marathon Start & Second Chip Timing – 21.097 km (Elevation: 1,349.3 m / 4,426.7 ft) / Hosted by COMO Uma Punakha

The starting point for the Half Marathon marks another key checkpoint for those running full marathon. A second chip timing station ensures accuracy in tracking times, and refreshments and two toilet facilities are available for both the category runners before they continue their journey.

Fourth Aid Station – 25.5 km (Elevation: 1,313.8 m / 4,310.5 ft)

With water and fruits provided, runners can take a moment to recharge before moving forward.

Fifth Aid Station – 29.6 km (Elevation: 1,254.3 m / 4,115.3 ft) | Hosted by Amankora

At this special stop, Aman will bring their signature hospitality to the race, offering unique refreshments alongside a toilet facility to keep runners refreshed and motivated.

Sixth Aid Station – 33.7 km (Elevation: 1,214.7 m / 3,985.3 ft) | Hosted by Zhingkham Resort

At this station, runners will experience Zhingkham’s distinctive hospitality while refueling with much-needed refreshments. A toilet will also be available.

Third Chip Timing – 35.8 km (Elevation: 1,234.8 m / 4,051.3 ft)

Another chip timing checkpoint will provide runners with an update on their progress, along with a water station to keep the participants hydrated.

seventh Aid Station – 39.1 km (Elevation: 1,213.3 m / 3,980.8 ft) | Hosted by Six Senses Bhutan

Known for its world-class hospitality, Six Senses will host this aid station, offering specially curated refreshments and a toilet facility to ensure runners stay energized for the final stretch.

Eighth Aid Station – 40.6 km (Elevation: 1,210.6 m / 3,971.9 ft) | Hosted by Dhensa Resort

The final aid station before the finish line! Hosted by Dhensa, this stop will provide runners with the last burst of energy needed to complete the marathon.

The Grand Finale: The Finish Line in Kaja Throm, Khuruthang Town

At an elevation of 1,206.5 meters (3,958.4 feet), the finish line awaits in Kaja Throm at Khuruthang town. Whether running the Full Marathon (42.195 km) or the Half Marathon (21.097 km), crossing this line is a moment of triumph, marking the end of a challenging yet breathtakingly beautiful journey.

A final chip timing checkpoint will capture each runner’s official time, ensuring that their efforts are recorded and celebrated.

Special Post-Race Treatment

After the race, runners can unwind with a special treat provided by our hospitality partner Amankora—a soothing massage at the finish line and other entertainment programs which will be offering runners the perfect way to relax and recharge after their incredible achievement.
