The 11th Bhutan International Marathon Awaits

The countdown is on for the 11th edition of the Bhutan International Marathon, set to take place on March 1, 2025. Nestled in the majestic Himalayas, Bhutan is not just a destination; it’s an experience that transcends the ordinary. This marathon promises not only the thrill of competition but also a profound connection to the culture, landscapes, and people of this enchanting kingdom.

Running a marathon is a journey, and in Bhutan, that journey is nothing short of extraordinary. The marathon route primarily traverses rural landscapes, with approximately 50% on hard-packed dirt and 50% on pavement. Starting at an elevation of 6,700 feet, the course offers breathtaking views and a diverse terrain that will captivate both seasoned marathoners and first-time participants alike.

The race begins at 8:00 AM, and as you embark on this adventure, you’ll find yourself descending into shallow rollers before the route flattens out towards Punakha. The course follows the picturesque Mo Chhu River, guiding you through the rural beauty of the Punakha Valley. You’ll encounter lush rice paddies, vibrant monasteries, and charming villages, all while enjoying stunning views of the iconic Khamsum Yulley Temple.

A highlight of the marathon is undoubtedly the chance to cross the 300-foot-long suspension bridge over the Pho Chhu River. Located approximately 7 miles (11.27 km) from the finish line, this stable bridge is not only runnable but also offers a perfect opportunity to pause and soak in the majestic views surrounding you. As you cross, take a moment to reflect on the incredible landscapes that define Bhutan—it’s a memorable part of your marathon journey.

The course is designed to be as enjoyable as it is challenging. After the suspension bridge, runners will descend a short hill before continuing on hard-packed dirt for about 3 miles (4.8 km), following the Puna Tsang Chhu River. As you near the finish line at the picturesque Punakha Dzong, the atmosphere will be filled with excitement and camaraderie.

The Bhutan International Marathon is not just a race; it’s a celebration of health, wellness, and community. Participants from around the globe come together to share their passion for running, united by a shared love for this stunning country. The marathon embodies Bhutan’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which emphasizes well-being and social responsibility.

By joining this marathon, you become a part of Bhutan’s ongoing story—a story that celebrates not only physical endurance but also cultural exchange and environmental sustainability. You’ll leave not just with a medal but with meaningful connections and memories that will last a lifetime.

The Bhutan International Marathon returns on 1st March 2025—are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime?
