Run Through Serenity, Embrace the Spirit of Bhutan.

Marathon Route Description

The Bhutan International Marathon (BIM) offers an unparalleled running experience through one of the most serene and breathtaking landscapes in the world. Whether you’re tackling the full 42 km marathon or opting for the 21 km half marathon, each distance provides a unique journey through the stunning rural backdrop of Bhutan.

Full Marathon : 42 km

The Full Marathon takes participants through 42 km of challenging yet rewarding terrain. The route is a perfect blend of rural beauty, with approximately 50% of the path on hard-packed dirt trails and the other 50% on paved roads. Runners traverse vibrant villages, lush forests, and scenic riversides, experiencing Bhutan’s natural wonders up close.

Starting at 8:00 AM at an elevation of 6,700 feet, participants will face a combination of rolling hills and flat stretches. The marathon follows the Mo Chhu River through Punakha Valley’s rich rural landscape. Along the way, runners will be treated to awe-inspiring views of the Khamsum Yulley Temple, rice paddies, monasteries, and the iconic Punakha Dzong.

The course offers a gradual descent with an overall elevation loss of 1,000 feet, making it manageable yet physically demanding. At the 18.6-mile mark, runners cross the famous 300-foot-long suspension bridge over the Pho Chhu River, a highlight of the course. After traversing more hard-packed dirt paths, the final stretch leads participants back to the picturesque Punakha Dzong, with a cut-off time of 7 hours.

Half Marathon : 21 km

The Half Marathon, starting at an elevation of approximately 4,311 feet, offers a more condensed but equally adventurous route through Bhutan’s rural countryside. With 40% of the course on hard-packed dirt and 60% on paved roads, this 21 km journey presents a dynamic mix of terrain, providing runners with spectacular views of Khamsum Yulley Temple, the Mo Chhu River, and the stunning Punakha Valley.

Participants will cross the same scenic suspension bridge over the Pho Chhu River before finishing at the majestic Punakha Dzong. Like the full marathon, the half marathon also offers a generous cut-off time of 7 hours, ensuring that runners can fully enjoy the experience at their own pace.

The Perfect Setting: March in Bhutan

Held on March 1st, 2025, the 11th edition of BIM takes advantage of the beautiful transition from winter to spring. March is an ideal time for running in Bhutan, with mild temperatures and blossoming flora adding to the enchantment of the landscape. The cool, crisp air and scenic surroundings make Punakha Valley even more picturesque as runners navigate through lush forests, rice terraces, and vibrant local villages.

The event not only offers a physically rewarding experience but also provides a profound cultural and natural immersion, with the backdrop of monasteries, temples, and chortens enhancing the journey.
