Breast Cancer Survivor Leong Wai Leng to Run the 12th Bhutan International Marathon 2026

There are stories that touch the heart, and then there are stories that change how we see life itself. As we count down to the 12th edition of the Bhutan International Marathon on 7 March 2026, we are beyond honoured to welcome an extraordinary athlete whose journey reflects the spirit of this race — courage, resilience, joy, and the pursuit of happiness in every step.

Leong Wai Leng is a name that inspires runners and non‑runners alike. A dedicated runner supported by Sacred Kingdom Travel, Wai Leng’s journey to Bhutan is far more than a race entry. After enduring breast cancer, undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she courageously returned to running — not just for sport, but as a celebration of life and strength. In 2025 she made history by completing an incredible 110.5‑kilometre ultramarathon within 24 hours, earning recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records as the first breast cancer survivor in her country to accomplish such a feat.

Wai Leng’s story is a powerful reminder that our greatest triumphs do not come from never falling, but from rising each time we do. There were no shortcuts, no easy moments, no magical breakthroughs. Just consistent persistence, willpower, and the quiet determination to prove — most importantly to herself — that her life could go beyond her diagnosis.

That same belief in rising beyond limits is exactly what makes the Bhutan International Marathon so special.

Set in the breathtaking Punakha Valley, this marathon is unlike most. It’s a journey through rolling rice terraces, gentle riverside paths, vibrant communities, and rolling foothills that honour both the physical challenge and the reflective spirit of running. Every runner here experiences something deeper than just a race. They encounter themselves — their hopes, their fears, their joy, and the communal bond that forms when runners from all walks of life share the journey together.

Our theme this year, The Ascent of Happiness, was chosen because we believe happiness is not a destination — it’s an upward movement. It is found not when the path is easy, but when you embrace effort, support others, and keep going even when the next step feels hard. Happiness is in turning struggle into strength, and quiet moments into lifelong memories. Wai Leng embodies this beautifully, and we know her presence here will electrify the race in ways that go beyond medals.

For runners who join us in the full, half, or even fun run categories, this marathon will be a celebration of endurance, joy, and connection. Imagine crossing the finish line at Punakha Dzong, greeted by cheers, laughter, and the radiant happiness that comes with overcoming your own “mountain” — whether that was training miles, self‑doubt, or even life’s most challenging chapters.
